Obsession

Year: 2026

Director: Curry Barker

Rotten Tomatoes: 93%

Plot: After a hopeless romantic uses a mysterious “One Wish Willow” to make his crush fall in love with him, he gets exactly what he wished for—and discovers that having his desire returned comes with a horrifying price.

Marcela Notes: I am a rare hater, from a very pondered and nuanced stance, of this movie and am about to go in depth as to why. I saw this early on before it blew up and had heart nothing of it and avoided trailers going in completely blind. I was *immediately* put off by the cat storyline and it threw me off going into it. Who the fuck puts their dead cat in a trash bag like I immediately both disliked the main character and thought the writing was silly regardless of it planting the seeds of us disliking Bear. I have a humongous bone to pick about the total praise and adoration of Nicki's performance, it being compared to the likes of Toni Collettein Hereditary and more makes me want to rip my hair out. I can recognize the talent and dedication it took to portray such an intensity, but I didn't find it unique and definitely not fucking Oscar worthy, in fact, most of her screen time left me cringeing. The fact that it appeals so much to kids and teens, sorry, speaks volumes to me, sorry I am very judemental about horror preferences as you can tell hehe. Anyways here's the note I wrote on my phone the second time watching at home when I still had hope that I was just being too critical the first watch:

"Obsession is stupid"

Who the fuck puts their dead cat in a trash bag this is already stupid as hell

Her acting isn’t scary it’s cringey. Just because she committed to the bit doesn’t mean it’s good 🙄

How the fuck did he not hear her duct taping the door? Mr. Wakes up in silence bc she’s watching him sleep?

He wants to be a food critic but can’t taste that he’s eating dead rotted meat?

Why would she just stand there pissing shitting and vomiting all day I do not get it? She like, elephant shit on the carpet???

Knowing about the curse or not, fuck that, why the hell wouldn’t he tell her parents or put her in a psyche ward. Not 👏 my 👏 problem 👏 bitch 👏

Is Bear slow????

Why does her acting like an old woman with dementia impress people so much????

I called that the block would say kiss the person on your left before he read it out loud.

No one would be yelling “get her to the hospital” if someone started stabbing their face with a broken glass bottle at a party they would be screaming “call the police” or “tackle her” and her facial reaction is stupid not impressive as an actress SORRY its giving porno

Literally anyone stranger or friend would have her committed

I can’t stand the music I can’t tell if this movie is trying to be scary or not

Sarah’s college storylines cheesy dumb unnecessary as hell, her death predictable af why would he just sit there doing literally nothing

Why would he help her hide the body and not idk have her arrested for murder boom problem solved like he’s really that pussy struck

Absolutely worthless putting another predictable scene with the acceptance letter

The only things I enjoyed were the store clerks and phone rep. Totally disjointed from the rest of the film again what tone are we going for nothing makes sense

Like he’s crashing out trying to fix this when he could literally could have her committed or arrested

How does one wish willow have mixed reviews when it can make it magically rain money? (Dumb)

“Bear open up I got like a billion dollars it’s real” as if he wasn’t getting rained on by stacks of money right next to you?? This is not a good script??

I literally cannot believe the success and acclaim of this by so many age and friend groups

The only scary parts are when real Nikki wakes up and comes through not when she’s acting like a dumb bitch. She’s not scary she’s acting like a bad dog with separation anxiety.

Dumb.

Fun Fact: Barker's filmmaking rule for Obsession was to eliminate traditional insert shots: the camera only cuts when the cut matches the character's exact line of sight.
