Behold my all-encompassing spooky magnum opus!
My love for all things scary, my lore, and my adolescent trauma began at the ripe age of 5 when I secretly hid behind my family’s couch as they watched Poltergeist. I was changed and definitely stunted, but now I’m hot and hilarious, so it was all worth it.
I started making silly little hand-doodled horror movie lists when I was younger, well, because the autism. Eventually, those lists turned into a yearly scary movie recommendation list, and for almost a decade I’ve come up with a new one every haunt season. I finally gave into delusion and free will, embraced my insanity, and dedicated over 100 hours to creating this site to hold all of my favorite scary movies — movies I would love for you to discover and enjoy, too. Don’t know where to start? Now you do! There’s something for everyone.
Obviously, not every horror movie I’ve ever seen is here, and you’ll notice plenty of movies missing that you might expect. I assume most people have heard of mainstream horror, so I like to focus on the niche movies that didn’t get wide distribution, the ones that were overlooked, or the ones I think deserve a little more love.
Horror is completely subjective. I don’t believe a movie simply can or cannot be scary. No one says “that wasn’t romantic” after watching a romance, or “I was NOT thrilled” after watching a thriller. So why is there so much pressure for one horror movie to check every box for what causes fear — not just for you, but for everyone else? I used to fall asleep watching The Shining. Rosemary’s Baby bored me to death. Now they both frighten the crap out of me. Time, age, perspective, experience, belief — they all shape what scares us.
I love that everyone has their own fears and specific movies they just can’t stand. I, for instance, have never been able to sit through all of The Nightmare Before Christmas because the animation scares me so much. It makes no sense, I know. I think everyone can appreciate horror if they just know where to look for the right ones. I hope you find not one, but many new things to watch, enjoy, and tell your therapist all about.
Please tell me if you liked or disliked anything I suggested. I love talking about movies!
Happy nightmares, y’all!
